Started watching season 2 of For All Mankind. The season opener wasn't great. It really dragged (which was compounded by being an extra long episode). When it finally did get to the interesting part, it was kind of cheesy. While season 1 wasn't the greatest thing I ever watched it was good. I'm hoping that it picks up a bit in the next few episodes, because if not, I'm going to drop it.
The premise of season 1 was that in 1960s race to the moon, the Soviets beat the US. In order to try to regain our pride, we built a permanent moon base call Jamestown. (And of course the Soviets built one as well.)
In season 2, they're trying to get humans to Mars. It's ~10 years later in the early 80s. We have a space shuttle, and SkyLab hasn't fallen back to Earth. Jamestown has increased in size and now houses ~20 astronauts.
One of the interesting things about the show is how they play with the timeline. Towards the end of season 1, it's the early 70s and Nixon is in office. He loses the '72 election to Teddy Kennedy. At the start of the season 2 opener, they do a montage of TV and print news that shows how their timeline is different from ours. John Lennon was not killed, but Pope John Paul II was. Reagan is elected in '76 instead of '80. Things like that. Unfortunately, it all flew by really fast and was hard to follow.
