A number of people on Tildes tend to be contrarians. If you say black, they have to say white. They pick knits, they split hairs, they are persnickety.

For what it's worth, forums encourage that sort of discourse, and not necessarily in a bad way. If you're talking to someone in real life and they say something, you can nod and go "uh huh" to keep the conversation going. Eventually, the topic will shift to something else and you two keep talking.

But on the internet, nearly all fora have rules (implicit or explicit) against posts that don't move the conversation forward. There's also no changing the topic, because that other topic belongs in that other thread. So the net effect is that you end up posting your disagreements in order to have anything to say at all.

That doesn't change the fact that tildes users are extremely persnickety and they also think they understand things better than they do [ ;) ], but I thought I'd throw another viewpoint out there.

    (See what I mean?)

However improbable a theory may sound or appear, as long as known laws of universe will allow it to happen, I'm willing to consider that theory.

And I ask you, what is the secret of creating these mind blowing works of writing?

You've gotten a lot of good advice here thus far, but I want to touch on this. Nearly all books - and we're talking actual published literature, here - don't sell all that well. Most aren't really all that good.

So when you read critically acclaimed, mind-blowing literature, you've got to keep in mind that it is among the best writing in the world. I'm not telling you not to compare yourself to that, but if you do, you need to keep a sense of perspective or you'll go insane. You're basically asking "what is the secret to being Picasso."

More tactically, you can't sit down to write about "anything which is useful" - that topic is so broad that of course you can't think of anything. You need to have a specific thing to write about. Are you really good at something at work, and can write a better manual for how to do it? Did you tell your kids a bedtime story and want to put it to the page?

Whatever it is, once you pick, just start writing. It doesn't matter if it's shit. Writing is a skill like anything else: it takes practice.

you need to know what is happening if only for the hope to be more informed about the politics of the government you live in.

Agreed wholeheartedly, but I think the level of détail is so low that you don't really need to consume a whole lot of media to get there.

What I mean is this - if you're, say, German, you need to know that the Russia-ukraine war is happening and, generally, why and how your country is reacting. But do you really need to know tactical détails? If I say "yesterday the Russians tried to push through harkov oblast but were repulsed; the lines didn't change but a bunch of people died," does that change anything about how you conceive of the war from a political-strategic viewpoint?

An hour of cable news and 30-60 minutes of news podcasts every day is a LOT of news, my friend. I really don't think you'll be substantially less informed if you reduce that to like, one of those podcasts, every other day.

I appreciate that this is clearly an emotional issue but I'm not sure how you're looking for me to respond to this. Maybe you're not.

Yet drivers expect that not the slightest restriction or inconvenience be placed on them. They often cry and moan if they don't have free parking feet from their final destination. They often expect entire cities to be built around car travel at the expense of every other form of transport. They often look down on pedestrians and cyclists as sub-human animals.

From a technical standpoint, you're right that this is clearly very achievable. I think most opposition to the suggestion (and why I oppose it) is due more to the discomfort of having the government so directly control your actions. This is a radical exaggeration, but please bear with me - it feels a little bit like having to walk around in handcuffs so that you don't punch anybody.

Corey's books read like treatments for screenplays. Which is, essentially, what they are. Franck and Abraham are both screenwriters and I suspect they wanted The Expanse to go to TV from the very start, but it's easier to get a book published and it's easier to get a TV show greenlit if you have a successful book. There's a distinct lack of the joy of writing in their writing, which makes it pretty pedestrian to read even if their ideas were outstanding (which they are not)

This is so fascinating to me, because I would've put their strengths as strong (if not particularly flowery) writing and good character work. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I agree that the ideas are very straightforward, but that's not really what the expanse is about. It's a story about people more than anything else.

I'm not sure I agree with that - or at least, that's not what I meant to imply. There are degrees of justification; just because the US perceives a chinese media company as a threat, that doesn't mean that, say, the BBC is likewise threatening.

And finally, I don't think it needs to be a hot war, either. Just look at Russia's attempts to influence the elections of multiple European powers - this is all pre-war (e.g https://www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/resrep21009.6.pdf).
