Listen, I loved BSG at the time but I’ll tell you right now: if you aren’t feeling Season 1 you really don’t need to bother finishing out the series. Season 1 is still, in my opinion, the show at its absolute best, so if you aren’t feeling it now… well, it ain’t getting any better. People often cite “33” as one of the best episodes and it’s literally the first one after the miniseries. I’m not kidding when I say it’s all downhill from there. The series has its moments, right up until the end, where it can really shine, and there were some great twists and turns along the way, but again: if you can’t get into the first season, you probably aren’t going to enjoy the rest. There’s no shame in bowing out now and saving yourself the time. And I say this as a fan.

Safe House: a movie where Patrick Stewart is either the last member of a Hellfish-style tontine or an old man with dementia

The Critic: the fantastic Jon Lovitz animated series that I believe Tarantino was going to adapt into his tenth and final film until recently.

Kipo was my first thought as well when I saw what OP was looking for.

I loved Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss, and I’m actually looking for more shows like that, that aren’t interested in courting both kids and adults, but a strictly for adults cartoon. I’ve been a fan of adult swim for years but kind of fell off after the Venture Bros. I really enjoyed Close Enough until it got Zazlov’d. Invincible is fantastic as well. What I enjoyed about Hazbin Hotel is that it has an almost Looney Tunes quality to it in the way the characters move and talk, and even the sound design, but it was also very fresh and new.

To be perfectly honest I feel like the latter half of your post contradicts the first half of your post. At the top you say the gayness must be relevant, but what you really seem to mean is that his marriage must be relevant. Because that’s what you interpreted later as the important aspects of his character. He’s a man who checks in with his spouse on earth, and being gay is just part of who he is.

You basically say the same of Miles (emphasis mine):

Miles Morales is black and that is part of his character and depicted very well, but it's not relevant to the plot of him becoming Spider-Man. It is just who he is, and that is shown by making the audience listen to the music he listens to, for example.

But up above you say (emphasis yours):

If Chekhov's gun has to be fired, well then the gay captain's gayness has to be relevant to the plot somehow, which is also a valid criticism because this way you end up with movies where people need to be gay to be in it rather than just characters who happen to be gay.

So which is it? Do characters “need to be” this or that or is it “just who [they are]”?

I think ultimately we agree, we want well rounded, fully fleshed out characters. And in some cases a character’s race or orientation or other form of identity may be relevant to the plot, if that’s the story you want to tell, but I think in other kinds of stories there can still be room for those characters.

Honestly, it just sounds like you think any representation is inherently tokenization. Like, your logic dictates that a minority or marginalized character can’t just exist in a story without their existence being justified by the story, otherwise they are just a token. To me that feels even more like tokenization to have to go out of your way to say why it matters that a character is a minority. That sounds like a huge buy-in to cis/hetero/white hegemony to me.

Maybe you could clear this up by providing an example of a good and well written minority character that isn’t a token. I am opening to hearing you out and not trying to be hostile, I am just totally baffled by your position as laid out thus far.

This is a WILD take! So characters are assumed straight by default unless there is a story-based reason for them not to be?? That’s insane.

Like, let’s imagine a new Star Trek series. You watch an exciting episode where the dashing Captain defeats the Romulans. At the end of the episode he retires to the captains quarters where he receives a video call from earth. It’s his husband. The captain says “Woof. What a day!” And the husband says “I dunno about your day but I had group of rowdy Nausicans at the bar today so it couldn’t be worse than mine.” “Oh yeah? Let me tell you…” credits.

So we learn the captain is gay. His husband runs a bar on earth. Does his gayness help him defeat the Romulans? No, it’s just a detail about his character. You could write the exact same scene above with a wife. So why make the captain gay at all you might ask: because some people are just gay. Statistically, there would have to be gay starship captains. Right? So ultimately, if you have a problem with this captain being gay for no other reason than he just is then you might want to ask yourself why you have a problem with that at all and if maybe what you have a problem with is gay people and then hopefully you follow that introspective rabbit hole a little deeper.

I actually prefer that the screen is not backlit. One of my favorite times to use my Playdate is right before bed, because unlike my phone or my switch it doesn’t flood my eyes with blue light. I use either my nightstand lamp or a book light if my partner has already gone to sleep.

Edit: the screen is so highly reflective, so even in dim light situations I can still see clearly at the right angle.

I’ve had mine for about 6 months, and I definitely feel like I’ve gotten tons of value out of the system. I take it with me everywhere. Break at work? Check. Passenger on a boring car ride? Check. Waiting in line at the bank? Check. It’s hard to really grasp how tiny the machine is until you are holding it, but for me that’s the best part and what allows me take it everywhere. I never got nearly as much use out of my DS back in the day, and these days my Switch only leaves the house if I’m flying or taking a train. The last time I carried a handheld with me this much was my Zelda Game & Watch, until I beat Link’s Awakening again. The difference is that had 3 games and the Playdate has infinite games. And even after you get your 24 free games, other games out there are dirt cheap compared to any other platform. The most expensive game on the market that I am aware of is $15. Most games are between $2 and $10, but some are even just $1 or free. Heck, Mars after Midnight is only 6 bucks!! That’s insane!

So yeah it’s a big initial cost, but after that I’m just coasting. My broke ass can buy a new game every week and it’s no big deal.

Edit: if we assume that all 24 season one games could have been sold for $5 that’s already $120, so it’s almost like the system only costs 80 bucks.

I do believe that Edward’s has the chops to pull this off. Colin Treverow he ain’t. Edward’s has a great sense of scale and can make big things feel huge and regular things feel tiny. He has a distinct style. He can also shot an action sequence that’s easy to follow and engaging. Good choice all around if we simply have to dig deeper into this dry well.

Oh I don’t disagree with any of this (except the notion that Biden ever would have stopped at one term or that the DNC would want to pressure him to do so; as you pointed out incumbents have an advantage and running someone new against Trump essentially casts Trump as the incumbent considering he’s actually held the office, even if poorly). In fact, I agree with nearly every point you made in your thoughtful and well-sourced comment. But you play the hand you are dealt. And the hand we have been dealt in 2024 is Biden vs Trump 2 whether anyone likes it or not. And frankly, even with everything pointed out in Stewart’s piece regarding Biden’s age he’s still the best choice (of the two choices that we stuck with). When you vote for a president you aren’t just voting for once person, you are voting for an entire administration, and while there’s things I would prefer were done differently or more quickly, I have overall been impressed with Biden’s administration. It has been the most leftward-focused administration of my lifetime (even if it is still not as progressive as I would prefer). He’s putting good people in these positions and if I have to choose between two senile geezers I’d rather not have the one who would put Stephen Miller or his ilk in any position of power.

If you want to see answers to the problems in our system that you have so thoroughly outlined I believe the key is start local. Get Ranked Choice Voting on the ballot in your city or county. Let the people in your community see how it works, the results it can deliver. The more people you win over the easier it will be to get RCV on a statewide ballot. Start electing progressives in your local elections and help them gain name recognition and notoriety that can propel them to a larger stage, and eventually the national stage. Everyone wants change and they want it now, but change happens over years and years of convincing people that the changes you want are worth it, and it’s always an uphill battle. But it can be done. Alaska and Maine both use RCV for statewide elections now.

lol no and I can’t imagine what in my comment gave you that impression. The GOP is utterly devoid of good ideas and good candidates, I’m very aware that whatever they churn out after Trump will be no better and likely worse. But there’s no crying over spilled milk, for better or for worse our choices for 2024 are clear. But in 2028 at least the democrats will be holding another round of primaries which is our opportunity to adjust the direction of the party, not to mention all the smaller local elections where progressive candidates have a much better chance for election and meaningful change in a voter’s life.

It’s a combination of the device itself being incredibly tiny so it’s easy to take anywhere, and the huge variety of games available. I use it frequently at home, on my breaks at work, when I’m on the train or a passenger in a car, when I’m waiting for my car to be repaired, or to pick up my spouse from the doctor or whatever.
