I don't care personally. It doesn't affect me one bit how someone spends their time.

Side note: I wish is that the silly zekka callout thread hadn't been posted but maybe I'm in the minority there.

Edit: given that Deimos banned goldfish I think that this place probably isn't for me.

Good luck to Deimos. For his own sanity he should just start banning what he doesn't want on the site instead of being light handed.

What a bad day he's had (it was his anniversary today!) Nobody deserves that kind of stress.

The meme itself was pretty much dead before the actor became deathly ill. The resurgence of the meme and a new focus on the actor himself is due, in my opinion, to a few things; people trying to help a dying man, more people learning of the meme because of the ouroborous of meme publicity, and virtue signaling.

honestly its not even the best lazy town meme. that honor goes to this -- still a better love story than twilight.

It's no coincidence that these statues were raised when they were. They we're all put up during flare ups of white supremacist sentiment. I have no qualms with taking them down. The never should have been put up.

If the govrnement won't take them down, then let the people do it for them. Those protestors did a good thing.

Anyway, all land is 'stolen' in a capitalist society. It's no surprise that it's being stolen again, especially since many people from whom it was stolen the last round still live. I'm sure they want it back. Tho I doubt the state will return it to them these decades later.

I just can't imagine why this matters. It's literally tabloid nonsense gone mainstream. Distraction from actually important problems.

I was just really bored and had grown my own pot.

I agree. It was a gag as second in the early episodes, but it was a little wobbly. It found its feet and I was really sad that it was over. One hell of a cliffhanger. Funny stuff.

I read An American Marriage a while ago. It has graceful prose about the relationship between the wife and the incarcerated husband. There's a low simmer of contemporary politics (racial, sex, and economic) but the focus is on the emotional turmoil that this kind of situation imposes on a couple, and on individual people. How does one cope with being free and your partner being incarcerated? What does this kind of dynamic mean about our society? There's a lot of letters and first person sort of accounts.

It's an emotional book. Made me cry. Not just because of the story, but because this is the reality for so many people in this country. Would recommend.

I honestly think that it is a temporary effect. The jobs were filled by citizens before the migrant workers in the late 20th century and the early 21st. If there's a need for workers, eventually the positions will be filled. Maybe at a higher labor cost, maybe not.

Companies relying on exploitative low-cost labor is not a good thing. Frankly, that's the only reason I'm against illegal immigration and temporary migratory work visas -- it creates a power dynamic that inevitably leads to abuse.

(I am pro-immigration in general, btw. I think it is a good thing.)

It makes for neat solutions to many problems. And it stays that way, for me, until I think about "what if I or someone I care about was one of the 50?" At that point empathy kicks in and I realize that it's cruel to enslave. And so my ethics changes, and it's no longer ethical.

It's impossible to separate the individual from ethical problems. If you believe you can it's not because you actually can; it's that you're ignoring that part. Many societies--historical and contemporary--ignore the individual.
