Das People seems to be hating a lot on icons, but I disagree. Sure, a lot of sites have dumb, unintiutive icons but that is not what OP is suggesting. Common icons like the voting arrows, edit/deleting symbols are almost universal. Tildes certaining shouldn't go icon crazy, but they would certaining assist in highlighting important elements, and make it easier to understand and use the UI.
True, but if you have used forums before it is pretty intuitive. I love icons. I am studying Japanese alongside my degree and occasionly I will go on sites in Japanese, and icons let me use the site quickly, instead of slowly reading half the page looking for what I want.
They shouldn't replace text completely, but they can certainly assist it.
