We are zone 3 transitioning into 4. Our growing season is longer now but soil moisture in the spring/early summer is a challenge sometimes as our precip is not as reliable as it once was. This summer we had two months of below-average rainfall and then 4" in one 24-hour period in early August. I think on the balance the longer growing season will increase productivity (we used to see first frost in late September, but it's been well into October recently) but the changing rainfall patters will be a challenge-- more irrigation will be required.

They initially lost my wife with this episode, but the description from a friend is what drew me in. Later eps-- it only took a couple --were enough to get my wife back in front of the TV. I think it made sense strategically as the splash of this ep got a lot of press and water-cooler talk going. I likely wouldn't have heard about the show at all for another season or two otherwise.

Just finished a long road trip through the American South, following the US National Civil Rights Trail. Listened to a lot of blues and funk along the way, but in particular had my kids listen to Gil Scott Heron's "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" several times. Now that we're back in the (not so) cold Northland, I'm putting together a playlist that will include songs like "Birmingham Sunday," about places we visited.

Our kids are expected to cook a few times a week and they are masters of the easy meal. The most common thing they do is just boil something and add a sauce: frozen ravioli or somen noodles. When they are feeling ambitious they will generally cook some sort of chicken-in-sauce dish to serve with rice; that involves cubing and cooking chicken breast while the rice cooker is going, then adding a jarred Indian sauce or making a simple curry (i.e. coconut milk plus canned curry paste). All fine, esp from teen chefs.

My own go-to "don't want to cook" recipes are mostly soups. If you have an instant pot or a slow cooker they are almost no work. like this:

-three cups dried split peas or lentils
-six cups liquid (broth or water)
-aromatics as you desire (garlic, ginger, tarragon, onion, etc.)
-meat if you wish (ham or bone, cold leftover chicken, etc.)
-additional veggies if you like (carrots, celery, any root vegetable really) cubed small
    -salt and pepper to taste

Just dump it all in the cooker; it will take about 15 minutes on high pressure in an instant pot or 6-8 hours on low heat in a slow cooker. Adjust liquid and seasoning to taste before serving.

It was actually on Netflix at some point because I remember watching it there. Just checked and it's down now though. iTunes will stream it for $3, not a bad deal really. I agree the show is great.
