I decided to take a quick peek, and I'm surprised at some of the names included. I wouldn't call Kazuo Umezu "alternative", but then I guess he's not nearly as well known outside of horror manga fans. Aside from that, I haven't encountered a large majority of the manga listed here!

Of the mentioned manga and artists, I've read some of Shintaro Kago's works. And they're, well, definitely trippy. I've also read a manga by Usamaru Furuya that wasn't mentioned called "Lychee Light Club". Definitely one that stuck with me over the years, one of the first truly dark manga I stumbled across. Just very brutal.

One more from the list that I read and definitely enjoyed: Pure Trance by Junko Mizuno. I first found out about it from a friend's book about manga, where it included a picture, and went out of my way to find and read it. The picture just caught my attention because it was so unlike any other manga I've seen.

It's really interesting because it has such a cute art style with a really gruesome story. It opens up with a girl that looks like she'd be right at home in Polly Pocket throwing up pills and dying of an overdose. And from there it gets progressively worse: drug addictions, a boss willing to turn orphaned babies into accessories, sexual torture as punishment, someone getting tortured to death, clones getting pregnant on their own, kids dying... All in a super cutesy art style that seriously feels like it'd be in an old Saturday morning cartoon aimed at young girls. It gives the story an almost dreamlike quality, which honestly fits with the title.

Anyone read any of the manga on that list, what's your thought about it? Ok, any on that list except for maybe Junji Ito's works because he's probably everyone's favorite (mine included) weird...

Gotta be honest, I like the idea of checking out experimental manga (or experimental anything in general) in theory, but rarely actually followed through because they can be quite difficult to finish. So some assurance is appreciated!
