It's premiere time! 🎉 Anything this season you all are super into watching? (If you want to talk about whatever you're currently watching, that's fine too.)

Feels like at least half of the shows are Isekai or Isekai adjacent this season. If you want wrestlers, smart children, bookworms, or cautious people pulled from their lives and plopped down to save another universe, this is your moment.

Kemono Road There's this old D&D joke about a guy who builds a character all about suplexing whatever is in your way, we have an anime about that. No less than 3 times in the pilot episode does our hero suplex somebody, more if you count the actual wrestling match the show starts out with. Our heroes wrestling gimmick is that he loves animals, so when the princess of the realm summons him to take care of their beast problem, he declines by suplexing the princess and declaring his intent to make friends with all the animals. What complicates this is our hero comes across a beastman and woman, and cuddle-molests the guy into a stupor. (With a suplex, mind.) Third suplex comes into play by taking down a pack of wild Cerberus' with our lead taking down the alpha and making them into good boys.

If the show can put up a distinction between cuddling with beasts and molesting beastmen, I could see it being a fun watch.

Cautious Hero is Konosuba where the lead hero wants to overlevel for everything, and the goddess who summoned him is super frustrated. If that's what you want, it's what you are going to have.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is novel (hah) in our hero was and is reincarnated as a little girl who wants to read books, but in generic fantasy town, there are no books that aren't hand copied, so she's going to have to introduce literacy and the printing press to the world if she wants to be able to read anything. It's kind of bland in it's first episode, maybe it picks up?

Watched Oresuki, it's a car wreck, but it's not an Isekai, so points?

Oresuki So, half of episode one is setup with both the childhood friend and student president to ask out the lead, but both are interested in having an in with the leads best friend. So the lead is super bitter about this, cause he's such a "nice guy" and the two broke his trust, and comes up with the plan to play the two off one another, with him scooping up whoever gets turned down, because you know, he nice. This goes off the rails when lead has a stalker crush, who knows about his plan and is super into his asshole self, and is threatening to tell all parties involved that the lead has been playing them all, unless she starts going out with the lead. So this is a show about people pining over people and it making them super bitter to one another, and if it was better made I might be into it, but the structure is too repetitive and you can see the joke coming a mile away because it's always the same damn joke, and they keep telling it until it's funny. The one joke that worked for me is when the stalker crush had a park bench delivered into the library in order to confess her love for him because it was that absurd, but him replaying the same day post confession, but with running commentary on how these women are trash and don't deserve him but he wants them anyway doesn't do it for me.

I still can't stand weeby anime so I'm just rewatching Jojo's and re-reading the manga.

The word I would use is flamboyant.

I'll admit the jojo fanbase must be annoying due to how much it's talked about–but that's because, in my opinion, the manga is fantastic and the anime adaptation is very good. /r/shitpostcrusaders is also quite an active subreddit, I think it eclipsed /r/stardustcrusaders (the main sub) a while ago. Note that I'm gonna be a bit biased, even my handle here is a reference from Part 7 (Steel Ball Run).

Jojo's has been in publication since ~1987 so Hirohiko Araki has changed a lot in terms of his art style and writing. It went from ridiculously beefy dudes to a much more realistic, slender artstyle. The writing also went from "jonathan gud boi, dio evil boi" in part 1 to more eerie villains and nuanced cast.

I guess I've considered weeb anime to be typical anime that falls into heavy tropes like the protagonist is a guy who can't talk to girls and inexplicably is involved in some romance plot, that sort of stuff. If weeb is just heavily into anime in general then sure, Jojo's is a weeb anime. It's an extremely stylistic anime that doesn't really fall into those typical tropes. Not that it's perfect, of course.

I like some other anime like One Punch Man, Cowboy Bebop, Mob Psycho 100 but I can't stand like most other anime.

Either way, taking your argument as a start, the definition to be incredibly vague, to the point of making the word completely useless.

It seems that "weeby" is one of those words that isn't really precisely defined (because weaboo is such a general term) and thus can vary for people.

Okay, so it's a general term for people that go beyond liking anime, obsessing with everything Japanese in a ridiculous fashion.

If that is true, how can an anime be "weeby"? Weeby woud be an attitude towards Japanese culture, not a feature of Japanese culture itself... By definition, an anime could not be more "weeby" than the other, only its audience. Does that make any sense?

When I think "weeb" I think of people with anime profile pictures who communicate in memes.

This definition is precise enough to justify the use of the word.

I love Jojo, as you can easily infer.

I was not offended, just curious about the usage of such a vaguely defined word.

I'm not even that much of an outsider, I've been watching anime for more than 20 years lol. But I get it.

FWIW at least on /r/shitpostcrusaders we're sick and tired of the kono dio da / it was me dio meme. Some of the newer ones have been driven into the ground as well.
