What have you been watching / reading this week? (Anime/Manga)
What have you been watching and reading this week? You don't need to give us a whole essay if you don't want to, but please write something! Feel free to talk about something you saw that was cool, something that was bad, ask for recommendations, or anything else you can think of.
If you want to, feel free to find the thing you're talking about and link to its pages on Anilist, MAL, or any other database you use!
Not all this week, but the last things I watched were:
Gargantia - Loved it. Loved the setting, the feel, the characters. Was a bit disappointed by the direction it took towards the end, but still really enjoyed it.
Haikyuu - As good as people say. Great characters, great action, no over-reliance on cliffhangers that similar shows like Food Wars seem to suffer. I blitzed through seasons 1-3 in less than a week. I really should have been doing more work. This is just the kind of anime I like. Bright and colourful, strong characters, lots of exploration of the characters, absurd slowdowns and over-examination of small things, tournament arcs, great animation, music and voice acting (I watched the dub). Any recommendations for other similar shows (the sports aspect I can give or take, it's the quality and general feel I'm after) would definitely not go amiss.
Kakegurui - Just finished season 1. I enjoyed it. Not decided entirely how much I enjoyed it just yet, but it's a solid pick.
I will be starting either Gintama or Sket dance. Haven't decided yet, but any comments welcome. Apart from that, I'm going through all the remaining Studio Ghibli movies that somehow slipped my last binge.
Finished up Deca-Dance. Considering it was the only thing I was watching, it probably makes Anime of the Season. It feels a lot like Trigger, if you trade the incredible horniness of every main character with a more complete understanding of systemic oppression, but keep the over the top action, friendship power ups and space finale of a standard series.
Personally, I'd be more tempted to compare Deca-Dence to Gurren Lagann. While Deca is in some ways more serious that TTGL, I feel like the aesthetic and themes of the two shows are extremely similar.
Haven't really watched much lately, but I rewatched an episode of TTGL with my cousin yesterday (watched it once in the early 2010s, now rewatching it together with my cousin).
Outside of that I'm busy with Naruto and Full Metal Panic!
I've been trying to get more into magical girl shows lately. For a while I was in the awkward place where I liked the couple that I had watched but never got around to watching past the initial couple I'd watched.
So currently I'm watching Princess Tutu. It's fun and cute and has a few darker themes. I'm only six episodes in, but it seems like it's plot is going in interesting directions. The animation suffers from being a show from the early era of digital animation, but is not bad overall. My only real gripe with the show is that the transformation sequence makes me feel a little uncomfortable.
Anyway, I've been enjoying the show and watching thorough it a couple episodes a day.
Do these threads purposefully ignore LN's or are they just not popular enough to get in the title?
Haven't really watched anime this week. Except the last episode of SAO; felt a bit like the whole show has run it's course. For manga, trying to get back to finishing the second volume of 五等分の花嫁 (Quintuplets). Loved the show and trying to catch up. Been a bit lazy about reading manga, but I also started はねバド out of curiosity, as I picked up badminton recently. Not that much actual badminton yet, but I guess you need to set things up.
LN side, I'm still chipping away at the first volume of 青春ブタ野郎はバニーガール先輩の夢を見ない (Bunny girl). I'm actually surprised how lewd the MC is and how blatant the conversation is. Casually talking about prostitution and nude pics. Guess I was expecting a bit more tact, but I don't mind ^^.
