This is a fascinating story about a portrait of a young enslaved black man in 1830s New Orleans, once lost and now found. (Gifted link to bypass the paywall)

That really was fascinating. Kudos to the Met, and Mr. Simien for tracking the painting down, acquiring it, and having it researched, as well as to the unnamed art collector who originally bought it at auction and had someone actually investigate what was was underneath the overpainting. And shame on the New Orleans Museum of Art for never bothering to do any of that, and instead just keeping it in storage for over 30 years before selling it.

Thanks for sharing the article (and providing the gift code), boredop!

p.s. As a massive fan of Baumgartner Restoration, this kind of story is right up my alley. He would be totally over the moon if he ever discovered anything this significant underneath overpainting. The only thing he ever seems to discover is slightly more detail covered up by overzealous previous restoration efforts, or ever more damage to the painting than he originally anticipated.
