This video essay is a deep dive into Adastra, covering it's themes, storytelling techniques, and a very touching personal story about how it affected the video's creator in a major way as it encouraged him to come out of the closet.
If you haven't played Adastra yet, I'd highly recommend it. It's free on itch.io, DRM-free. It's also fairly short by VN standards, completable in about a dozen hours depending on your reading speed and how much it breaks your heart. You don't have to be a furry to get a lot out of it. If you don't think you'd like it maybe consider watching just the first section of the video and make your decision based on that. Full disclosure, though; you might not care for this if you're straight; you're just not the intended audience.
I probably wouldn't have bothered to post this if I hadn't scrolled down to the comments, where the game's character artist had posted a statement:
I didn't get the "post Adastra depression" thing back then because I knew all the major plot points of the story while me and Howly were working on Adastra.
I commend it to you because with thus essay I got to find out iconography and analogies that I never thought about, so it kinda felt like I myself was finally experiencing Adastra!
Another queer furry VN I can recommend is The Testimony of Trixie Glimmer Smith. I think of it as the best VN, full stop, although in fairness, I haven't yet played Adastra. The characters are...

The characters are relatable, and the funny animal artstyle work better than it has any right to. I have a bit of trouble putting into words why exactly this one works so well for me, it just does. Maybe it is that it feels more personal than a lot of other VNs, like you feel there is a human telling the story. I dunno.

You do you, friend. I just got no interest, and the muscles in my old eyes can't handle all the rolling.

Even with that, I still think Echo is better. ;-)
