I'm really not into these boxes...why not just go to the library and just pick up something.

I can definitely see the appeal for companies to offer these. They're easy and people like to give them as easy gifts. It just feels so wasteful, since I bet most of these books will not be read....

Yes, great (wasteful) gift idea. Good for re-gifting. Lately my kids get me something from a wish list, which, if they have to get me a gift (I tell them not to bother) at least means the gift won't be unwanted or wasted. Life would be better if people weren't all caught up in gifts.

On the other hand, if you know someone is a reader and know what they like, this could be a perfect gift, and that's what we all want to give and get, isn't it? LOL.

            Love this, lol

I feel like this idea would lend itself really well to sci-fi- and fantasy-specific boxes since there are so many themed extras you could easily include in those, and be especially nice if the service was paired with a discussion forum/Discord so that it operated like a sort of online book club.

Edit: I'm actually surprised how few pair discussion with the books. The Nocturnal Reader's Box seems to have the theme idea going, but doesn't have a social component. Book of the Month Club has a discussion section, but it's buried on their site and almost laughably bad.

Funny, but in the days of LPs, this was done fairly often. At least a poster was included with many albums, and "discussion" took the form of a long essay about the music inside, especially if it was a classical album. The Beatles came along and basically made it an artistic pastiche of the fan club experience with a Sgt. Pepper Mustache and other things you could cut out and adorn yourself with.

And your comment also reminds me to box sets of DVD's with similar goodies to enhance the marketability of expensive media collections. The Book of the Month approach seems a little different, but it's still cool.
