I read An American Marriage a while ago. It has graceful prose about the relationship between the wife and the incarcerated husband. There's a low simmer of contemporary politics (racial, sex, and economic) but the focus is on the emotional turmoil that this kind of situation imposes on a couple, and on individual people. How does one cope with being free and your partner being incarcerated? What does this kind of dynamic mean about our society? There's a lot of letters and first person sort of accounts.

It's an emotional book. Made me cry. Not just because of the story, but because this is the reality for so many people in this country. Would recommend.
