Gunnerkrigg Court is a fairly long running webcomic that fits somewhere between science fiction and fantasy in genre. It's got something for just about everyone, since it features young girls growing up in a boarding school, robots, magic, monsters, and Gods.

The story itself is particularly hard to describe, as the entire world changes the more you learn about it. It starts off about a smart little girl trying to adapt to life in a boarding school, but then you find out the forest you're not supposed to visit is full of magical creatures. And you find that Gunnerkrigg Court isn't just a boarding school, it's like a small city full of researchers. And then as the characters grow up they don't just change in maturity, but in ways you would never have possibly imagined. And trust me when I'm saying I've just scraped the surface; if I told you more I would take away from the pleasure the discovery will give you.

I've been following it since it was still pretty new and the art was very rough. But don't let the beginning fool you; the reason why I'm recommending it now is that the story is finally making sense of a mystery that started nearly 15 years ago. This is a story that doesn't just give you plot twists that are unpredictable, but would not even be possible in any other world. And then when you find out you'll start to realize that these reveals were foreshadowed years earlier.

The link on here leads to the first page since if you view the main page right now you will get the most current comic page which is full of massive spoilers (though to be fair, you'll be missing so much context it probably won't make any sense). Don't let the early art style fool you; later on the artist's work gets much better. I like to think of it as the art growing up with the main characters.

For those who have already read the comic I can't believe that Kat made the Tik Toks! And the fact that she says all the Tik Toks are the same bird is a huge revelation. Do you think perhaps that means that Kat is already officially a god-like entity like Coyote?

I should just catch up on all of the comics I started and never finished (or read up until current).

:edit: oh shit KUKUBURI had a few updates at the beginning of the year (last update was 2011). Thanks for getting me to remember all these comics!
