The Wednesday Pull - April 24, 2024
Trying something different, and making a discussion thread about Comics that one would want to highlight of the issue, trade, web or any variety. As is tradition, discussion starts on a Wednesday.
I come bearing gifts! This is a one week promo for GlobalComix for their library service from a recent Reddit feature in /r/comics.
The most recent comic I read was Ultimate Spider-Man #4, as my brother has a pull on Kindle and we share libraries. This book was weird by Marvel standards, not being built around a fight or even much of an external conflict so much as a dinner date Spidey has to attend that is deeply, deeply uncomfortable for him and the audience. Very similar energy to the scene from Homecoming where Toomes is driving his kid and Spidey to Homecoming, talking around stuff, I know you know, good stuff. I like a book where Spidey is green, and the juggling of his lives between Peter Parker and Spider-Man isn’t just scheduling but a morality question. Do the right thing, but how much, and too what end? That’s still a new question for this iteration of the character, and I appreciate the viewpoint.
My legacy pull is Monstress, and I’m just starting with Book Two, aka Volume 4, aka Chapter 19. This art is incredible, the world is fleshed out, they throw a lot of characters and world building at you but the nature of it being a road show means that as long as your main characters are alright, you’re gonna have a pretty good time, and Maika Halfwolf is an interesting character to be around.
Finally, I want to add at least one webcomic to this roundup, so here is the latest from Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal. That’s probably not where all children’s books come from, but I have noticed a couple.
