Comics seem to follow a very linear pattern where they are under-appreciated, then they hit with an incredible story which captures the collective consciousness.
They follow their success by spreading entirely too wide, too far, too fast, and everyone stops caring. So they resort to stunts and crossovers to try and get the eyeballs back.
This all happened before, and now it's happening again. I give it 2-3 years tops before the MCU does a DC crossover.

Not to mention that with the MCU on the wane and the DCU trying to establish itself, that sort of crossover in film would get attention and about the only way that I could think of escalating on the multiverse. Not saying it would be good, but it’s a possibility.
