What kind of comic books are people reading?

Hopefully this is the correct section, there isn't a comic book group yet, hopefully soon though. What kind of comics do people read? Any good books out there?

I recently read The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui. It's a graphic novel that's like, kind of about her experience as a Vietnamese American but... so. In some ways, as an Asian American, I assume that these stories are going to be about her experience growing up here? But the story actually focuses strongly on the experiences of both of her parents and even her grandparents growing up in Vietnam and the factors that led to the Vietnam War. It's an incredibly moving story and such important context. A lot of what we hear about the Vietnam War in Western countries comes from things like U.S. soldiers' stories but we get very little input from Vietnamese people. I've been rethinking lately how we understand history through the people who get to craft the narratives in academia, but this is such a great book for creating that sort of questioning while also just showing what graphic novels and own-stories can do.

As for other comics and series I'm following right now...

Really enjoying The Wicked and The Divine, partially as a mythology nerd. The story is now starting to really heat up.

Monstress is also starting to get interesting, and has gorgeous art, in general.

I'm a little behind on some of the other stuff on my pull list, but just for an idea of what's on there: Ms. Marvel, Black Panther, Faith, Mirror (need to catch up on this... mixed feelings about it? Great art, alright storyline), Bitch Planet, Paper Girls (if you like Brian K. Vaughn or even like, Stranger Things, absolutely grab this!)

I'll have to look back at my stuff.

If you like Shakespeare and/or hip-hop, Prince of Cats by Ron Wimberly is super fun.

I just picked up Bitch Planet and I'm even more optimistic about how much I'll like it based on the sheer amount of overlap in our pulls/likes.

I don't normally read comic books. However, I have been buying the 'Wonder Woman: The Golden Age Omnbius' volumes as they're published, and slowly reading those old original Wonder Woman comics.

My currents pulls not already mentioned are:

    • Saga (the best comic I've ever read, bar none)
    • Descender
    • Royal City
    • Black Hammer

In the last ~6 months I've discovered & binged on a ton of Jeff Lemire's work; I highly recommend his graphic novels: Roughneck, Essex County, and The Underwater Welder as well as the Trillium series.

I've also recently read the first two collected volumes of Snotgirl, but am not totally sure how I feel about it yet. It seems like every time I start to care about the story/characters or understand what's going on the issue ends and the next one picks up somewhere entirely different to start that process over again. The art is pretty fantastic though!
