Given I don't know anything about comics, will future issues be released digitally? Or is this just a special case and usually have to buy hardcopies?

You may want to wait for it to be collected in a trade and/or offered in a library service as part of Libby or Hoopla, but Boom’s digital licensing to libraries has been incommunicado since they got bought by Penguin Random House, so you might be waiting a while. If you want the physical experience with individual issues, then you’ll want to find a local comic shop and ask them to start a pull for you. But otherwise, wait a few months and pick up the trade IMO.
