Just when you thought Mastodon was a bad name. I honestly breezed over this post earlier on Tildes because I read 'Calckey is a open source' and assumed it was something to do with encryption or spreadsheets.
That aside, this looks fun! I stumbled down the rabbit hole of Misskey a month or two ago and it seemed so much more vibrant and active (in an obvious, things-firing-all-over-the-screen kind of way) than Mastodon, but clearly targeted towards a certain user.
It is just a reskinned Misskey though, right? I'm surprised they're going standalone, but maybe I'm misunderstanding - the announcement is more of a vibe/philosophy than anything else.
I think/hope federation is the future. It probably won't be Calckey that does it, but it might service as yet another foundation or concept to build on.
Above everything else in my first impressions, Calckey seems to have functioning discovery/recommendations, which was always a sticking point on Mastodon.

We are no longer based on Misskey's latest releases, as at some point it became obvious that we had different visions, so we decided to continue as a standalone project. Since then we have added our own unique features, like account migration, a new layout to view posts and browse threads, and we are currently in the process of implementing Mastodon API compatibility and post editing – with many more changes and improvements planned for the future!
