Android has much better (edit— worse) sandboxing and security measures than ios. This means that apps can do more potentially unwanted things in the background, including compromising your device or phoning home. Android in default configuration also phones home more than ios, although that's easy enough to change, if you have the know-how.
I will probably try this out on my iphone, once the driver situation gets better (assuming it does), but I won't be using it as a daily driver, and won't be installing certain apps (google apps especially) on it.
A neat proof of concept, but this seems like a massive step backwards in terms of security and privacy.
