This was my first foray into creative coding a while back. For being the first thing I’d ever done, I am happy with how it turned out. This sketch is inspired by atomic emission lines, which act as a sort of “fingerprint” for different elements and are one of the ways we can find out what something is made of just by observing the light it produces. I always thought they were quite aesthetically pleasing.
This piece is generative, in that clicking (on desktop) or reloading the page (on mobile) will result in an entirely new set of emission spectra for some imaginary elements. I have a few sketch ideas for what I want to do next, but simply haven’t had time recently to do them.
Clicking on stuff randomly makes a pretend atomic emission line, huh :) I like that the somewhat grainy feel to the piece reminds me of wall art made out of organic fibres. I also like the...

I like that the somewhat grainy feel to the piece reminds me of wall art made out of organic fibres. I also like the interactive nature of the piece. Kind of feels peaceful to click and see the patterns that emerge.

[dumb idea redacted]
The grainy look there took a bit of head scratching to achieve but I like how it looks. I wanted it to look like something drawn with pen and paper.
As someone who's had to sit through classes on how the spectra is achieved, pretty cool piece of art!
Thanks!
