I'm sharing with you three paintings from my series. I'm an art student and have been working on this for the last six months. So far there are about a dozen paintings in the series. They are all oil on cotton canvas, 35 by 50 cm.

Im very interested in any discussion, feedback and opinions you might have. Please share them, no matter what they are! I will provide some additional information below, you can skip it if you want an untainted view:

The people in these paintings, I don't know them personally. They are first drawin in charcoal and then painted, from a photograph. The title and visual might give a hint to what kind of photos they are. I found (American) internet archives, listing millions of entries of people picked up and documented by the police. There was a lot of additional information about them. Some were sexual predators and murderers, others had drug offenses. Some couldn't pay a parking ticket. I was able to look at an overwhelming amount of information, without any barriers to entry.

That this was legal I found very disturbing. I'm not from the U.S. But putting moral judgements aside, I found it interesting to browse this huge database, full of involuntary photos.

I was looking for faces that spoke to me, visually speaking. And those I tried to paint. Not photorealistic, but hopefully true to their essence and character. And visually appealing, atleast for my own taste.

I wish I could show you them live. They are my strongest work yet, in the 8 years I have been painting now. But for now this will have to make due.

Thank you for reading. Looking forward to any comments, and I'm also happy if you just looked at them. Thank you!

The lady that is in the third portrait... I love the exhaustion of body and soul that comes to the front. Her jawline on the left looks a bit over contoured, maybe? The biggest problem with mugshots is that the lighting is sometimes very harsh. I don't think the shadow under her cheekbone is too dark, but maybe the corner of her jaw can be pushed back slightly?

Wonderful job; I'd love to see more.

As cold as the process itself seems, it's kind of funny that the photos themselves are not standardized that well. Lots of different light and camera set-ups and as you said, a lot of overexposure. Looking at the lady again, the left jaw's form could be described a bit more accurately. You got a good eye!

The first one also is my personal favorite. I love him a lot, so it's difficult to resist the temptation to copy his "formula" (I would have to find that first) and then just repeat it. I'm glad to hear that he's well captured, that's the most important thing for me.

I will share some more here in the future. As Tildes is looking right now, you shouldn't have trouble finding it ;)

Yes! A lot of people have told me similar things. Some search their memory because they are convinced they have seen those people before (they most assuredly haven't!). But you worded the same...

But you worded the same phenomenon much more eloquently.

These are really good. Do you just pic individuals based on your first impression of their photo? Or do you read about them before deciding to paint them?

Thank you! It's 100% based on my impression. But I take my time, and re-see them a few times before I decide. But I do save the additional info on them.
