I'd be interested in hearing a little bit about the message/meaning you're trying to convey (if any). The lines "back then there weren't any queers / things were better, isn't that clear?" makes me think this is written as a sardonic take from a conservative perspective. It reminds me a bit of Brand New's "Desert" in that regard. That said, even coming at it from that angle I still can't put all the pieces together, which makes me think I might be on the complete wrong track.

And I wouldn't mind some clarification on the meaning of the poem too, since I'm somewhat perplexed by it as well. Not that all poetry needs to have meaning, but I'm just curious if there was any intended.

Thanks for the explanation. After reading your reply and then rereading the poem afterwards it makes a lot more sense to me now, and IMO is a lot more compelling with the added context as well!

I feel the exact same way about Brand New. They were a favorite band of mine for a long time, and I think Science Fiction is deeply resonant and affecting, but I also have a hard time listening to them now on account of the lead singer's actions.

As for your poem, it makes so much more sense now that I realize there are two different perspectives! I was trying to fit it all in one coherent whole, assuming the same speaker the whole way through, which of course doesn't work as the two main stanzas are deliberately opposed. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on it.
