City Beautiful discusses how even a small number of vacant lots or empty parking lots can seriously degrade the urban fabric of a city. Transforming these poor land uses into valuable amenities like housing, offices, hospitals, and parks reduces traffic, decreases commute times and costs, and reduces our reliance on environmentally unfriendly suburban development. Infill development that has a focus on mixed-use buildings and transit is particularly helpful for cities. Long-term, it is more cost-efficient for municipalities as it reduces urban sprawl and subsequent roadway and utility maintenance.
