Story with pictures of the rehabilitation and release of these manatees, including how they were flown around the country. Very cute story. The temptation to post on ~humanities was very strong,...

The orphans, three baby females, arrived one after the other at ZooTampa’s manatee hospital.

The first had been found swimming alone in shallow waters, her umbilical cord still attached. Two months later, another was rescued from a canal. Then came the smallest they’d ever gotten: Manatees typically should weigh about 65 pounds at birth, but this one was only 44 pounds.

They were named Calliope, Soleil and Piccolina.

The temptation to post on ~humanities was very strong, but I resisted. Also, the ending picture of the manatee with the tracking device being greeted by the wild manatees reminds me of a Far side cartoon.

Edit: also, the title link is a gift URL.

It is wild to me that they’re fine to be outside of water long enough to fly them across the country, like sure they breathe air but still.

They really are amazingly calm but I was still surprised to see them be relatively easily transported. Somewhat related, I was also surprised at how inexpensive the flight was to ship them. I mean, to an individual $21k is a lot, but for specialized shipping of 3 one ton sea creatures, that's far less than I would have guessed. I wonder if DHL gives them a special rate as a form of charitable donation.
