This article was amended on 5 June 2024 to clarify that 39% of those threatened “sometimes” or “frequently” were targeted by people engaged in illegal activities. A previous version incorrectly said 49%.

Honest question: what proportion of journalists who cover other illegal or politically embarrassing activities are also threatened for their work? I want to understand how much of what they're dealing with is specific to climate crisis coverage, and if the article included this information, I missed it.

Anecdotal but a while ago the FT ran a story uncovering the Wirecard scandal (basically a big German tech company was committing accounting fraud). The company tried to intimidate the journalists and German banks and regulators kind of closed ranks.

Full details: https://www.ft.com/content/745e34a1-0ca7-432c-b062-950c20e41f03. Sadly I think this is surprisingly common.

The Council of Europe also carried out a survey of around 1,000 European journalists where they found

More than half the journalists surveyed said they had been subjected to intimidation by public authorities, while four out of ten reported being threatened with physical violence.

I'm generally not a fan of the FT, but that article was fascinating. Thank you for sharing it.
