Five years after it closed, Constellation is announcing they will be restarting TMI Unit 1 to provide electricity for a Microsoft data center to be collocated with the plant (which will be renamed to the Crane Clean Energy Centre, after their former CEO). The aim is to have it online by 2028, with a separate license extension pursued out to 2054.

It doesn’t entirely surprise me they are going this route. They probably saw the progress being made with Holtec restarting Palisades (in Michigan), along with the insane demand for data centers (which often come with new gas plants built adjacent) and they realized the economics for restart worked out. In the last year of operation, it had a capacity factor of 96.3%, one of the best in the fleet.
