My own anecdotes are that I have felt two <5.5 and both times I instinctualy looked in a specific direction which I later learned was towards the epicenter. It could have been coincidence, but if not I am surprised that I could tell the direction of something moving so quickly.
Very cool. I believe that is pretty much exactly what happened in my situations. I was indoors both times, and it was internal structures moving that caught my senses. Once was on the 15th floor of a Seattle skyscraper, and the other time was in old 1970s 2-story Santa Monica apartment building. I agree that if I was in a field I would not have noticed the direction.
I felt it but was far enough away that there was no damage and it barely made anything move. My wife didn't feel it.
I could feel it here in Vegas, but I hope everyone in California is okay.
