    There's a lot of hate for plastic, but in the end it's just an extremely useful material. We've already taken the economic gains offered by plastic and to discontinue it's use wont be profitable....

    There's a lot of hate for plastic, but in the end it's just an extremely useful material. We've already taken the economic gains offered by plastic and to discontinue it's use wont be profitable. As the article points out that means capitalism is going to use every tool it can to fight for it's continued use. That's all expected and our government seems very receptive to that thinking.

    I don't really see a situation where regulation, behavioral changes, or active cleanup fixes things. The only solution I think is viable is to support intense and specific materials research to develop alternatives for specific plastic use cases. But even then, plastic is hard to beat.

      It is, but it has some serious drawbacks that we've been ignoring for decades. It seems only recently has there been a consumer urge to reduce the amount of single use plastics on the market, but the underhanded and subversive tactics used by the main manufacturing companies seem to be adept at stifling pushback.
