    Having studied OCR for the last few months I'm gobsmacked that the IRS doesn't employ it yet. I get the systematic defunding but the passport office and USPS have done so since the 80s.

      Especially after watching Tom Scott's video on the USPS and learning just how accurate the OCR system is for detecting addresses (99%). The technology was "good enough" decades ago, it's for certain good enough now. It's insane that the IRS in 2022 deals with paper at all. Granted some people can't/won't use virtual submission, but the fact that the IRS doesn't immediately just digitize it all immediately upon receipt is just.... sad.
