Mr. Kaplow has tried everything he can think of to find workers, placing Craigslist ads, asking other franchisees for referrals, seeking to hire people from Subways that have closed.

And yet somehow I doubt that increasing wages to a competitive and livable level is among the things he has tried.

Tamra Kennedy, who owns nine Taco John’s franchises in the Midwest, started offering $100 as a bonus to new employees who reached 100 hours. She has started offering merit increases twice a year, and she pays all employees more than the minimum wage.

Oh, hey look... an employer that gets it.

McDonald’s has announced that it will expand its tuition-reimbursement program, committing $150 million over five years to tuition reimbursement for employees who work at its stores for at least 90 days. Before, the requirement was nine months.

McD's seems to understand what's required as well.

“Thirty years ago, I would not put up with the stuff I put up with today,” said John Motta, a longtime Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee in Nashua, N.H. When an employee recently missed a shift, one of his stores could serve only drive-through customers for about an hour.

“You try not to be too harsh on them,” he said, “because you’re afraid tomorrow they’re not going to show up.”

How much do you want to bet that "lazy, good for nothing Millennials" is something this man constantly complains about when his employees are out of earshot?

I'm curious what kind of tuition reimbursement is being offered for only working there for 3 months?

McDonald's is tripling its college tuition benefit for employees

Last week, the fast food behemoth announced plans to increase the program by allocating $150 million over five years and lowering eligibility requirements from nine months to 90 days of employment and weekly shift minimums from 20 hours to 15 hours.

Previously, eligible crew members could receive $700 a year to cover tuition costs at a trade school, community college or traditional four-year college. As of May 1st, eligible restaurant employees will have access to $2,500 a year and managers will have access to $3,000 a year.

The wording seems to indicate he's a franchise owner, but I wonder how much employee pay is set by corporate.

Good point. But while I can't speak for every franchise, I know from first hand experience that Tim Horton's in Canada gives a lot of leeway to franchise owners, especially on wages, since a franchise in the heart of downtown Toronto naturally needs to pay employees far more than one in rural Norther Ontario just due to cost of living differences.

    I wonder why that is?

    In 2000, about 45 percent of those between 16 and 19 had a job — today it’s 30 percent.

    I wonder why that is?
