German dinner. I live in the US, and embrace my German heritage. When I was growing up my grandparents would regularly make these types of dishes.

For this meal we made: sauerbraten (the kind that takes 5 days), spätzle (made with a spätzle maker bought in München, the kind I've never seen on Amazon), sauerkraut (baked for 8 hours), and some kind of beet dish (my friend made it, not sure exactly). Alas, we didn't have time/bandwidth to make another of my favorites, warmer kartoffelsalat (hot potato salad). To drink, we had Riesling Kabinett from the Mosel and Spätburgunder from Baden (I think).

German dinner is one of my favorite things to make, and I take pride in it. Although, it takes a (sehr) long time and I can really only pull it off over the holidays. It is involved, but a labor of love. I joke that the first step of German dinner is to get out every pot and pan you have.

I've been to Germany more than once, and have ordered these dishes at restaurants. I dare say that my renditions are better, but I would also posit that making proper sauerbraten that takes 5 days is not cost effective for a restaurant. Anyway, I hope I do my Oma proud.

    Guten appetit!

Question for you, have you found good winter kale in the US? My friend in Germany likes making grünkohl, but my understanding is his kale is harvested after the winter frost so it is less bitter....
