The last one I played was Most Wanted, and its paid DLC cars were really frustrating. You'd find new cars placed/hidden around the open world, but when they started adding paid DLC ones, they'd just place them around the map too with nothing easily distinguishing ones that required DLC from ones that didn't. So I'd just constantly be finding cars that I couldn't use without buying a DLC pack.
Oh yeah, MW 2012 was terrible for its DLC. I wasn't crazy about the "find cars to unlock them" thing in general, but the DLC integration was so bad. Fortunately they didn't do that in any games...

Fortunately they didn't do that in any games since then. NFS 2015 didn't have any DLC iirc and Payback, while it did have microtransactions and loot boxes, only had car DLC as regular purchases.
The community manager has confirmed on reddit that there are no loot boxes. There will be paid DLC and "collectibles marked on the map."

I'm still going to wait for the reviews, but this is at least one step in the right direction. I was really quite disappointed with Payback.

Awful trailer, but i'm excited for some Need For Speed
Always reassuring to see a reveal trailer with about 5 seconds of in-game footage. /s
Move along everyone.
