How the coronavirus reveals authoritarianism's biggest flaw
The most important lesson from the 1918 influenza pandemic: Tell the truth

Some Russians who recall the Soviet-era cover-up of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident are less sure.

“I don’t believe the coronavirus numbers,” said Ekaterina, a Moscow accountant. “I remember what they told us about Chernobyl at the time. It’s only now that we’re finding out what really happened.”

Most people won't know better at the time, and by the time they do – because it will come out if you lied to them – it's much more likely that the gaslit nation wouldn't protest too much. Russians don't have a strong tradition of demanding good from the power.

Unless I'm too out-of-touch with the nation and this is what ends up overthrowing Putin, in which case it would be the most delighted I could get from being so wrong.

Letting this virus that could kill a large amount of the population (especially given how much older and vodka/smoking affected Russians are compared to the world) would be really bad for any nation. Maybe they have a plan like China's in case things get bad to set a curfew which doubles as a 'human rights have ceased to exist in this zone' button or an excuse to 'test out' their runet thing.

I'm afraid you're thinking too highly of this government's ability to reason in human dignity. This is a person in power who has one of his opponents murdered not two blocks away from the Kremlin on his birthday.

He needs populace as much as the next autocrat, but if a few thousands die from causes that could've been averted with truthful communication and he gets to maintain an illusion of power, it's a net benefit to him and the cronies that get riches off "smaller people"'s backs.

After seeing him praise China's strong response to COVID-19, I'm sure he's looking to implement the same thing to cover his ass.

Let's wait a week or 2 and see what kind of curfew he puts on you (? Heard you live in some random Siberian city) And see if anyone can escape and tell some fucked up stories about likely human rights abuses and see if Russia finishes implementing that great firewall of their own.

Ah. I fucking misread that. My bad. Looking forward to hearing those two assholes on the "debate" show talk about how great it is and how wrong everybody is for criticizing it.
