Fitness Weekly Discussion
What have you been doing lately for your own fitness? Try out any new programs or exercises? Have any questions for others about your training? Want to vent about poor behavior in the gym? Started a new diet or have a new recipe you want to share? Anything else health and wellness related?
Back in July, my back pain had subsided enough that my physiotherapist cleared me to start running again. He gave me some different exercises to help build up certain muscles to take the load off my back and said to start slow and work my way up.
I started just running for 2 minutes twice a week, and over the months worked my way up to running 6-12 minutes 3-4 times a week. Mostly I just tried to up the frequency and/or duration of my runs ever so slightly each week and back off whenever it felt like I was getting back pain.
It worked, and not only have I been experiencing very little back pain, but have been enjoying the benefits of going on regular runs.
So, about two weeks ago I decided to do a 5k. The most I had ever done was 3k, but I usually run at a fairly fast pace. I figured I would try to slow my pace down quite a bit and go for the longer distance and it wouldn't be too much of a jump that way.
It all went great. I did the 5k no problem and my back felt totally fine. I was super proud of myself. But my knee felt a little sore. I thought no big deal, I would just rest for a few days. After a few days it still felt sore and I was getting really worried that I seriously fucked up my knee. It wasn't an intense pain, just slightly sore sometimes and other times it didn't hurt at all but felt sort of... off? It's hard to put into words.
Anyways, it's been two weeks now and it feels like its just starting to feel better, but I'm still worried this might be a major problem with my knee and not something that will just go away with rest. I've been putting as little pressure on my knees this whole time, only walking ~30 minutes per day for exercise.
Running was starting to do a lot for my mental health, and the last few weeks haven't been great as I feel sidelined. I go to see my physiotherapist in a week, so we'll see if things keep improving until then, and what he has to say about it all.
It just sucks. I feel like I'm losing all my progress, and I don't really know what to do with myself. The good news is my back is feeling great hahaha. Though I am worried that if I rest for too long, it might start getting worse again too.
