One of the reasons (but there are others) that more men than women die by suicide is that men chose more lethal methods. If women start chosing those same methods were going to see the rates between men and women even out a bit, and that means a pretty big rise in overall rates.

The other is that this rise is in the age group of 10 to 14 year olds -- this is a group traditionally under a lot of control by adults, without access to means or methods. Seeing a rise in the lowest risk group (young women) is concerning.

Suicide is a complex phenomena, and we should avoid simplistic reasoning. I'm not persuaded by the doctor's point about social media. Other countries have the same use of social media but are seeing decreasing or stable rates of suicide.

Social media influence is only one element amongst others; and not at all necessarily a decisive one for young people outside the US/UK/CAN/AUS. Without trying for cheap boohoo sympathy, please consider this:

Imagine you're a girl, hearing from a young age on that it's best to be 'nice' and not to seek confrontation. Then you get older and are quickly forced to become alert, generally wary, and distrustful of people's motives - all the while still hearing "be 'nice', don't make a fuss". This can start pretty early btw, e.g. at 10, 10.5, when you're supposed to believe in the toothfairie still. After that you have only a few options, which in itself is not at all a bad thing, save for the fact that currently, in the modern world, all options are bad.

In short: most modern girls are raised one way at first, then bombarded with information to the contrary, and subsequently quickly expected to live in yet another way after trying to make sense of things.
