I'm not sure if here in ~creative is the right place, or in ~hobbies, but I just took a photo of the Cygnus Wall in the North American Nebula and wanted to share with folks. If anyone else here does astrophotography, feel free to share something you've imaged recently.

    Details on this capture:

    • Telescope: Astro-Tech AT80EDT f/6
    • Mount: Sky-Watcher HEQ5 Pro
    • Focal length: 480mm
    • Camera: ZWO ASI585MC
    • Gain: 252
    • Exposure/frame: 60 seconds
    • Sub-frames: 300 (stacked 240)
    • Stacker: DeepSkyStacker
    • Post: Siril (background extraction, stretching, sharpening)

The biggest thing holding back the sharpness of my images appears to be the slow drift in atmospheric and temperature conditions changing focus over the course of the night. I generally leave my setup overnight and pack up in the morning and I clearly see "focus drift" in the histogram of star size when you line up the sub frames chronologically.

Is it possible to take pictures like this in your backyard, or do you have to find a place that's dark enough? How dark does it need to be? I don't know anything about astrophotography, but I'm...

I don't know anything about astrophotography, but I'm endlessly fascinated by all the things we can see in space.

I took this in a suburb in a mid-sized American city in my backyard. So, not super bright, but not super dark either. Middle of the road so-to-speak. There are people who take amazing photos even in the middle of dense cities like Tokyo or New York City, but they use special light-pollution filters.

Nebula like this one are HUGE and take up a large amount of the sky -- I could fit almost 3 full Moons across in this photo and I only took a photo of a small part of the nebula here. You could easily take photos of them even with a normal DSLR camera and a modest lens (without a telescope).

But if ~hobbies is better, does that go for more general photography posts as well?

Honestly, image only posts are generally frowned upon here. On Tildes, In-depth content (primarily text-based) is the most important. And this site is very unlikely to ever support image hosting, or even inline image viewing, precisely for that reason. But if you want to make a post encouraging others to share the photos they have taken, and actually discuss them (important part), then ~creative, ~hobbies, or even ~arts would be fine, but submitted as a Text Topic not a link to a single image. Which group would be most appropriate would largely depend on how much creativity was involved vs how formal/informal you wanted the discussion to be. More creative would go to ~creative, less creative and more hobby level focus would go to ~hobbies, more formal photography (as an art form) would go to ~arts. Or if the you want to focus on a specific subject, then the group best suited to that (e.g. ~space for astrophotography).

And based on my (admittedly limited) understanding of astrophotography, I assumed it isn't quite as creative as other types of photography, hence my suggestion of ~space or ~hobbies. But I could be wrong, and if you genuinely think ~creative is the right place for it, I'm fine with leaving it here.

p.s. To make a Text Topic, in the Post new topic screen, leave the link part blank and instead just fill in the title and text section.

Yeah, I figured. I was just trying to strike a balance between a mostly text-based discussion post and what is ultimately a visual activity. I was also just "testing the waters" since I don't...

Yeah, I figured. I was just trying to strike a balance between a mostly text-based discussion post and what is ultimately a visual activity. I was also just "testing the waters" since I don't think there's any support for this kind of post here yet, but I was hoping to coax out a lurker maybe.

It's an interesting mix of technical aspects and artistry, but to be safe, I'd probably place this in ~hobbies in the future now that I've thought about it more fully. Next time I make a post like this, I'll put the discussion upfront instead of the link. Thank you!
