I bought a Silva Expedition Four on sale from a reputable store - affordable, good enough to use for what he needs now and the future, and not so expensive it would be disappointing if lost.
I realised I had no idea how to use a base plate compass, and I want to be able to teach him, so I turn to YouTube to find some instruction and this bloke has a great set of videos about map reading and compass use. He also has some videos where he compares videos and I like the fact he often says "I'm not recommended one over the other, I'm giving you the information so you can pick the compass which is right for you". Or, when he does recommend something he doesn't just go for the spendiest option.
I really enjoy listening to people who know what they're talking about, and I love it when they get distracted and start rambling. Here's an out take from one video where he starts talking about walls: https://youtu.be/TJf4xHNrAJ8?si=Il8qdd9wuUvtwiVZ&t=632
I tagged this United Kingdom because of the ordnance survey map being used and also he's in the UK.
The bit about the wolves/wall was indeed interesting but i can't help but feel like he pads out the videos in order to be at least 10 minutes long so that he gets more YouTube money and the title...

Still, thanks for sharing! Just wish I spent two minutes instead of twenty or so

Here's a description of every item on a base plate compass: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVf0v0TqoOg
