What drama is currently going down in the world of your hobby that the rest of us probably haven't heard about?

This was a great thread elsewhere, so I'm curious to see how it'd go with the ~~ crew.

There's a new edition coming out for Pathfinder. Since Pathfinder was created as a reaction against a new edition of D&D, there is some consternation from the more grognardy people in the community.

Basically there's three sides, people who are cautiously optimistic, people who don't really care either way, and the people who think a new edition is completely unnecessary. For the optimists, the new edition is a way to iron out the wrinkles inherent to the system (Pathfinder was itself originally an ironing out of D&D 3.5e, but limited itself to remaining mostly identical) and eliminate some of the ludicrous rules bloat. For the pessimists, the new edition is apparently going to turn into D&D 4e/5e/insert least favorite RPG, and is just a straight up money grab by the company after they saw how D&D 5e exploded in popularity by attracting new players (as opposed to Pathfinder's original strategy of attracting players who just didn't like D&D 4e).

To the people who don't really care, Pathfinder has literally a million books and they're not really going anywhere, so the only change is that no new books will be published. And even then, there's a bunch of third party publishers.

Probably doesn't sound super dramatic, but it's about as heated as the Pathfinder community gets.

I'm guessing D&D stands for Dungeons & Dragons?

I played osu for a bit a few years ago, and I never understood how they got away with distributing songs freely. They even have stuff that's been taken down from youtube.

I'm no audiophile and usually don't pay attention to such details, but playing osu! maps of songs I've heard elsewhere was some of the first and most dramatic cases where I thought "wow, this is a terrible copy of the song".

It works well enough for the game, and keeps the (non-video) map sizes down, but it's not really how I'd want to build a music library.

That certainly doesn't impact the legality of distributing the songs with the maps, but it has helped keep the game off the publishers radar, or at least a low priority.

Kat Von D announced on instagram recently that she's not vaccinating her baby. The makeup community is fighting back pretty hard... returning recent launches, and boycotting her newest launch. Youtube influencers are also publicly calling her out. You'd think her association with a white supremacist would have been what got this chick canceled, but nope, it was being an anti-vaxxer. I guess the stupid was too much for people to handle.

"So your negative comments are not going influence my choices - actual research and educating myself will - which i am diligently doing. This is my body. This is our child. And this is our pregnancy journey. "

My mum is always linking me her 'research' all the time and when I read it, I just google all the red flags and half the time I find the article she's quoting on snopes.com and whatnot.. I'm glad the anti vax fad was mostly after we were all born because she's certainly the type.

The annoying thing about confirmation bias is that it makes you more convinced in your ways, and also seems to narrow your field of view. My mum would never trust google over her facebook group or her 'spirits', and her links are on the internet just the same as mine so they must be just as valid. It's really hard to approach them about it too since it just becomes very vitriolic and personal very fast.

Are there even any good ways to handle a situation like this?

Unfortunately, this anti-vax movement will only really be corrected by one thing - dead kids.

Arg...I never knew she was a white supremacist or an anti-vaxxer. I've always picked her products because they were cruelty-free.

The IBJJF (unofficial ruling body of sport Brazilian jiu jitsu) is under scrutiny after some pretty poor calls at Worlds (most well attended / paid attention to gi aka kimono tournaments) by some of their referees. They've been accused of favoring Brazilian competitors over competitors from other areas and in one match specifically they didn't give a score to an American competitor for taking the back when they should have. Several higher ranking and we'll know BJJ practitioners have come out with statements calling out the IBJJF. I don't personally think anything will come of it and it will all go back to how it's "always" been.
