I think the main thrust of the article - new archeological evidence suggests that a far greater percentage of people lived outside of the empires famous in your textbooks - is quite worth meditating on. It’s really kind of exciting. We know history is skewed towards a small part of humans, and this is one more piece of that puzzle. But I think the article spent too long trying to contrast this with another idea - most people lived in empires therefore empires good - which feels like a straw-man (going in, I have no reason to take it seriously).

This essay takes a long time to get to the point but the point is interesting.
