The historical parallels the founding fathers wrestled with were present 45 years ago, and are present today. Other concerns and circumstances present in 1973 are in some cases much more important now than then, in others less.
What was true in the 1800s, the 1900s and now in the 2000s is that the Constitution of the United States is outdated, and that its own mechanisms for being changed seem insurmountable in a modern political climate.
So then what can be done when the world's oldest constitution needs fixing but only has 18th century mechanisms for trying?
I'll surely read this brilliant account of a special moment in US political history several times over the next weeks and months.
