i suppose it's largely because the japanese monarchy is much more foreign than any western monarchy and so it's a lot more novel, but i'm so much more interested in all the interesting circumstance and formality that surrounds just about every aspect of japan's monarchy than i've ever really been with the going ons of any western monarchy, particularly with the abdication going on currently. it's legitimately like a year long process, and even months after akihito formally abdicates there are still things he'll be doing things as a part of the whole process.
Offtopic but did that article completely lag out anyone else's browser? Thankfully Firefox's reader mode fixed the issue (and loaded all the pictures just fine too), but it was basically...

having just taken the time to read it, it took longer than a usual article to load and the browser didn't like it very much when it was loading, but once it was done loading it ran pretty...

Admittedly, I also have a bajillion tabs open at all times, so that might have something to do with it as well. ;)
