Really kind of sad. I'm not sure many people remember these days, but International Mr. Leather isn't primarily a beauty pagent; it was originally, and still to some extent is, a way of empowering and funding a well-integrated member of the queer community to do activism. During the 80s, IML winners were advocates, fund-raisers, and political centerpoints in the fight against the nation's neglect in the AIDS epidemic. If you're interested, How to Survive a Plague is a great and gripping historical look at the topic.

The queer community used to be more tightly-knit, in a lot of ways, and while I'm glad we've been able to defeat much of the oppression we used to face, it would be nice if we could remember the old days a little more strongly. There is no difference between trans and cis on the AIDS Quilt; we lost and mourned together.
