Ostensibly, non-consensual genital mutilation should be illegal, and it’s a shame that Sweden is stepping back from a quite progressive and positive stance on this.
If you are a close follower of one of these religions, should it not matter more that you are willfully electing to comply with the traditions of your religion, and undergo this pain/sacrifice by your own choice? If you consider it to be a true religious belief that a male must be circumcised, I don’t think that followers being voluntarily circumcised at 18 years rather than involuntarily at 1 day will make a substantive difference in matter in the worldwide/universewide perspective of a deity.
It’s frankly a bit gross that religious leaders feel that they have such dominion over our physical bodies. These edicts were passed down by oral tradition anyway, which basically amounts to an inaccurate game of telephone that is realistically up for interpretation.

From abortion, female genital mutilation and circumcision to sexual consent and even force feeding, there are lessons about societies and cultures of control to be learned. Instilling the basic notion that we are all entitled to control our physical person is essential to completing the yet-incomplete project of universal liberation.
The fact that dogmatists feel entitled to outrage over their desire to mutilate their young shows we have some ways to go. But I am heartened by the fact that this conversation is being had at all, speaking as a circumcised man.

This is a great point. As a ritual, these ceremonies are robbed of any potency by dint of their being performed on the unwilling. Imagine if they Catholics were fighting for the right to perform communion with a strappy chair and a feeding tube.
Plus if Yahweh and Allah demand foreskins don't you think they'd be happier with those of fully grown men? Like that's vastly more skin for the deity to idk... appreciate...
