I'd like to see this in schools. I personally would have liked it if summer break had been drastically shortened and all those days off were used to make long weekends throughout the school year. I would want like a 1 month summer break instead of 3 months. Summer break was always too long for me--I would develop poor habits, boredom, and my family was always poor so our house usually wasn't air conditioned (or at least not very much).

I didn't have too many issues with forgetting things over break, but I was a really good student. The majority of kids have major problems with this, and I still had SOME problems.

There's really no reason not to do stuff like this. American work culture would do well implement similar practices. I'd even be more comfortable working 4 ten hour days a week, instead of 5 eight hour days. Most days I wind up working closer to 9 hours or 8.5 hours with no extra pay. If the paycheck is the same every week, then why does it matter if it's 8 or 10 other than for timely reasons?

The system described in this article is about "working four, eight-hour days". Instead of cramming 40 hours' work into four days, they just drop one day entirely and work only 32 hours each week.

No, I know. I just meant that I'd even be willing to push it further by two extra hours every day

3 days on, 2 days off has been a really good cycle for me in the past. It works out to a slightly higher ratio than 4/7, but for me it strikes a good balance between productivity and recuperation. I wish it were easier to execute in more situations. I take 4/7 when I can, but for some reason that extra day really throws me off and makes it that much more difficult to get back into a decent rhythm.

I wish my job would do anything even remotely close to this. They used to, but they decided that happy employees are harder to grind down

A podcast I listen to mused about this phenomenon, e.g. going to work isn’t 100% about completing tasks. They tossed around the idea that part of making people do 5 8 hour days instead of 4 10 hour days is that management wants to know they have more opportunities to tell you go do something.

Also, what about vacations? Nobody wants to leave on a Friday--you're tired and you just want to relax. Airports suck now and driving is grueling. So if you leave on Saturday, you basically have the rest of the day and then maybe some of Sunday. You have to be back Sunday night. So you don't even get a full 24 hours to just not worry.

With a 3 day weekend, you aren't as burnt out on Thursday, so leaving that night is fine. Even if you leave Friday, you can spend ALL of Saturday doing anything you like, and then Sunday you can come home. You can actually get a real vacation.
