    i imagine some of the measures here probably would not work very well in the US or europe; iceland obviously has the benefit of being a smaller country than some US and mainland european cities...

    i imagine some of the measures here probably would not work very well in the US or europe; iceland obviously has the benefit of being a smaller country than some US and mainland european cities and being pretty physically consolidated, not to mention having a less-than-adequate-climate for meeting people late in the day for about half the year. still, would it not be cool if places actually invested in people like this instead of hoping the free market will figure it out?:

    Reykjavik Mayor Dagur B. Eggertsson said the Icelandic plan “is all about society giving better options” for teens than substance abuse. He believes the wide variety of opportunities that now keep students busy and inspired has dramatically altered the country’s youth culture.

    Yet better options cost money. Local municipalities like Reykjavik have invested in sport halls, music schools and youth centers. To make the programs widely available, parents are offered a $500 annual voucher toward sports or music programs for their children.
