If Orkney can do that, and I fully support their right to do so if they want, then I would like to formally request Denmark come over here and re-establish the Danelaw
I would also accept re-conquerment by the Normans. Frankly I will take any option that gets me my EU passport back.
In that case, make sure to stay away from Norway as they are not a part of the European Union either.
Norway is in the Schengen Area though, which would make travelling to the other member states easier.
I also vote for my town (in the South East of England...) to become a self-governing territory of Norway.
In all seriousness, the UK has a massive problem (well it has many, but let's not digress) with London-ism. Anything outside the M25 is of very little interest to our government, and it absolutely shows in the way they invest, and by how poor and powerless they are making local councils.
One can only imagine how much more this applies to somewhere as remote as Orkney. If this is truly within their remit and it's something the people of the island want, then more power to them.
Really hope they can get it! Maybe it would help get the rest of Scotland out of this shithole. Nothing against the English as people, but this government is a shambles.
The Orkney Islands are incredibly beautiful and one of my favourite places in the world. They also have amazingly well preserved historical sites. Maeshowe - for example - is a stone-age burial cairn built around 2800 BCE and actually has Viking graffiti inside from around 3000 years later. All this to say that Orkney has a long and rich history and connections to Nordic countries - in many ways stronger than the connections to mainland Scotland. Unlike the rest of northern Scotland, Gaelic was never spoken there and there is no strong support for Scottish independence. If you want to get a sense for life on Orkney, I would recommend reading some poems by George Mackay Brown. Anyway, if Orkney were to become a territory of Norway, I think my pull to move there might override any doubts I have about the attendent isolation.
Devon and probably Cornwall are ready to go too. We could use the help.
BRB moving to Orkney so I can get away from BoJo the Clown's legacy and his cronies making it worse... I would crawl over broken glass to get rid of this dangerous terrible government and get an EU passport back.
