Tech Bros Invented Trains And It Broke Me

Tech bros looked at this efficient, convenient, tried and tested system and thought how could we make it worse in literally every way possible. Thus the magrail was born by the company Nomo, a Polish deep-tech startup, whatever that means.

    How globalization failed us

This came up on autoplay and it's refreshing to see discussions about politics on a grander scale. He's talking to a lot of contemporary observations and it's easy to think that the global situation was inevitable but an accident. But seeing it spelled out like this really does make it feel like a grand conspiracy out in the open.

Let's see, here's some of the interesting stuff coming across my radar lately...

This is where the USA will bring online its first molten salt reactor since they were invented here in the 1960s at Oak Ridge National Labs. We are firmly in last place with this tech globally right now. It is the most promising candidate on the board for limitless zero carbon energy. No reactor yet, but the facility is ready to put theirs together as soon as the NRC approves their six hundred page application. That's probably a sure thing at this point, since the design is the safest nuclear project they've ever seen. I like that they had the foresight to put the chemical science engineering students right in with the nuclear energy students. Smart move on the university's part.

Warographics gives an excellent summary of Ukraine's new hotness and Russia's biggest nightmare. These drones have implications far, far beyond anything going on in current warfare. They are completely changing the game. They can chop up shipping lanes, submarines, aircraft carriers, bridges, and damn near anything else. They are also dirt cheap to mass produce, and Ukraine is looking at becoming a major exporter of these munitions. They will have a lot of buyers.

Perun gives a great overview of the current state of the orbital launch industry and the commercial space race. The short version is that SpaceX is now 80% of Earth's total global launch capacity (and rising), while their competition still has a lot of difficult work to do. SpaceX is further likely to achieve a literal order of magnitude increase above their current position by the time any of their competitors even catch up to where they are now.
