I am very aware of data privacy issues and I would never sell my DNA data for people to trade in perpetuity. The health insurance implications alone scare the shit out of me.

My mother on their hand belongs to the majority of people who think I’m some sort of privacy nut becuase I deleted my FB. She had no issues with doing 23andMe, signing the consent agreement, and innocently filled me in as her child as well.

Now 23andMe has half of my genetic profile to do with as they please, all without my consent.

It reminds me of the friends of friends bull crap that FB kept pulling, which led to me deleting my account.

Did she opt out of sharing her DNA data with external parties?

I don’t think so, I need to look further into that, but it seems like it’s likely too late. Also in a thread on HN about this topic, people mentioned that the wording of their agreement made it so...

I don’t think so, I need to look further into that, but it seems like it’s likely too late. Also in a thread on HN about this topic, people mentioned that the wording of their agreement made it so that you cannot opt-out of certain “partners.”

Edit: I am also a bit reticent to bring it up because I don’t want to make my mom feel bad.

Do customers realise that genetic genealogy companies like 23andMe profit by amassing huge biological datasets?
