If there really is a "clash of civilizations" between the post-Christian West and the Islamic Middle-East, didn't the West start the latest round? Wasn't the West -- particularly Great Britain and later the United States -- determined to fill the power vacuum left behind by the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I?

It's an interesting article that basically comes down to (if I'm reading correctly) that people's worries about clashes of civilization will ultimately be overpowered by our need to cooperate to survive? They're putting it at a borderline outside threat scenario.

I am not huge on the "clash of cultures" idea as the article points out all cultures were bad at one point and all cultures have the ability to progress. However with the CURRENT culture being exported from the middle east we do see a big confrontation with western culture brewing. While we definitely are more accepting than the last generation I think the re-emergence of radicalization in the middle east should be concerning. If they had women in bikinis on Israeli beaches in the 70's what was the mechanism that reverted them? At times the Muslim world was the most accepting and most progressive in the whole world, but certain religions have failed to make the jump to reformation. As the article mentioned the Jewish orthodox has moved backwards on the scale of modernization.

I think it all comes back around to the same point. Religion is an issue. The west strays farther and farther from the insane idea that we should be shitty to people because god likes us and hates them, but this is not the case with all areas of the world. The move away from religion seems to be the biggest step we can take in my eyes to finally rid ourselves of a substantial portion of the "stranger danger" we get when looking across the globe.
